Santana Golf

“The Hidden Gem””

Excellent Design, Maintenance and Client Service – the Keys to Success

Nearly nine years have gone by since the opening of Santana Golf and in this short but intense period, it has become established as one of the most popular courses in southern Spain.

It´s apparent that the combination of a magnificent design by Cabell B. Robinson and implementing a high standard of maintenance and exquisite customer care offered by its staff, have been the perfect formula for attracting golfers – which has been endorsed by the high levels of use throughout the years.

Located in the heart of the Sierra de Mijas Natural Park, the course winds through 6.200 metres of extraordinary beauty, on a relatively flat plot of land with a large variety of trees, features that give the course great colour and the look of a well established layout. And all of that with the added benefit of no urban development, which ensures it is an oasis of tranquillity that golfers are keen to discover.

With an exceptional design on each hole, an appropriated distribution of trees, wide fairways, and expansive greens well-protected by bunkers and not excessively contoured, this is a particularly spectacular course, which is very forgiving but at the same time a challenge for all golfers.

As far as the state of the course is concerned, it can be clearly seen that the objective – even obsession – has been to maintain the layout in a premium condition for playing golf in addition to the use of novel methods, Santana also has a large maintenance team with vast experience – professionals who have a great passion for their work. With the aim of helping their efforts, and avoiding the course of saturated play and excessive trampling of the grass, the management has limited the number of players allowed on the course daily – an intelligent but unusual practice on the Costa del Sol.

In short, the combination of an excellent design and impeccable maintenance, with appropriate customer service, has made Santana Golf the “Costa del Sol Hidden Gem”.

 Hole by Hole

1st Hole Par 4 – 321 metres

The Starting Hole is a slight dogleg to the right. The fairway is framed by avocado trees and the green is slightly elevated and protected by bunkers. Opening Tee shot to the middle of the fairway, second shot laid up short of the green.

2nd Hole – Par 3 – 160 metres

Appears quite easy but this challenging Par 3 demands a lot of respect.  Hit the middle of the green and forget about the position of the flag.

3rd Hole – Par 4 – 385 metres

From an elevated tee and a fairway that slopes from right to left, hit a good drive left off centre. The approach shot must be very precise due to the position and characteristics of the green.

4th Hole – Par 5 – 556 metres

Excellent use of the natural features have been made on this very challenging Par 5 hole. Difficult decision: keep left to avoid the bunkers, aim second shot towards the right and hit third shot into the putting surface. Beware of the arroyo (stream) in front of the green. This hole is a true test for a championship golfer.

5th Hole – Par 4 – 321 metres

A good tee shot is essential for this tough 5th Hole, so aim for the middle of the fairway and don’t carry the bunker!. The three-tiered undulating green makes club selection crucial and will test the putting ability of any player.

6th Hole – Par 4 – 335 metres

Dogleg left. Brave players who choose to fly over the cork tree on the left can set up an easy second shot, so here is a chance to make a birdie! However, on reaching the green, study the contours carefully.

7th Hole – Par 3 – 192 metres

Par 3 Hole guarded on the right by the river Ojen. The Arroyo (stream) Campillos in front of the green provides a real challenge. Judgement of the wind is vital!!.

8th Hole – Par 5 – 602 metres

The longest hole favouring the longer hitter. Play always to the left of the fairway which leaves you with a wide approach to the green.

9th Hole – Par 4 – 355 metres

Gentle uphill Par 4. The green can easily be reached in two, provided the tee shot finds the middle of the fairway.

10th Hole – Par 5 – 468 metres

The second nine opens with a Par 5 with a generously wide fairway and overwhelming scenic beauty. Play right of the bunker, followed by a long iron short of the lake. The receptive long green is defended by bunkers.

11th Hole – Par 4 – 291 metres

Dogleg to the right. Tee shot must avoid the bunkers. Demanding second shot requires accuracy towards an elevated triangular shaped green well flanked by bunkers.

12th Hole – Par 3 – 174 metres

Challenging Par 3, playing downhill towards a very large and undulating green, with bunkers on the left and a severe drop into eucalyptus trees behind the green.

13th Hole – Par 4 – 355 metres

Uphill tee shot. Make sure you take an extra club on the second shot. The sloping green is well bunkered left and right and difficult to putt.

14th Hole – Par 4 – 295 metres

Straight Par 4 with a narrow approach to the green guarded by bunkers.  No problem off the tee but be wary of a difficult undulating green.

15th Hole – Par 5 – 520 metres

Slightly uphill tee shot with bunkers on the right not visible from the tee. Play second shot to the centre of the fairway avoiding a sea of bunkers. The approach to the green must avoid the lake on the right hand side.

16th Hole – Par 3 – 150 metres

A very testing Par 3 with bunkers and water protecting the green. Much care is essential on the putting surface due to the many undulations.

17th Hole – Par 4 – 335 metres

Short Par 4 dogleg right, second shot nothing more than a wedge for the approach, leaving you with a birdie chance.

18th Hole – Par 4 – 392 metres

A very demanding Finishing Hole, with a lake along the right hand side and avocado trees on the left that make for a narrow entrance. The second shot requires extreme accuracy to get the ball to a tricky elevated green.
